Emigration Canyon is really in a canyon in Salt Lake County, located south east of the U of U and east of Hogle Zoo. It's the “back way" to East Canyon Lake, Mt. Dell Golf Course and the I-80 Freeway to Park City, Deer Valley, and Wyoming.

Emigration Canyon was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1961. It is significant in Utah history, as this is where legend holds that the Mormon pioneers entered the Salt Lake Valley in 1847. As Brigham Young looked out from the mouth of the canyon towards the Salt Lake Valley, he declared, "This is the right place. Drive on." These words have become famous in Utah history. The event is commemorated with “This Is The Place Heritage Park” at the mouth of the Emigration Canyon. Salt Lake City’s main zoo, Hogle Zoo, lies across from This is the Place park. Throughout Emigration Canyon, there are several historic markers designating camps, trail markers and milestones where the Mormon Pioneers passed while on their way to the Salt Lake Valley.

People love living in Emigration Canyon because you are in the mountains and yet only 8-10 minutes down a windy road to the University of Utah. There is very little commercial zoning in the canyon. Folks love biking or driving to Ruth’s Diner-the only and there is a rare liquor store next door (there are less than 50 in the entire state).
